Food safety at home

Healthy eating is more than just counting calories or picking nutrient-rich foods. The best healthy eating plans also include fun and easy safe food handling, cooking, and storage practices to keep food poisoning and foodborne illnesses at bay. Following these easy steps at home can help keep you and your family safe.

Buying Eggs

Buying

When choosing eggs, make sure they are clean with no cracks in the shells.

Egg Leftovers

Leftovers

Refrigerate any leftover cooked egg dishes promptly and enjoy them within 3 to 4 days.

Washing Hands

Handling

Always wash your hands, utensils, and surfaces with hot, soapy water before and after handling raw eggs to avoid cross-contamination.

Cooking

Cook eggs until both the yolk and white are firm. For dishes containing eggs, make sure they reach an internal temperature of 71°C to kill any harmful bacteria.

Storing

Keep your eggs refrigerated in their original carton at 4°C. Eggs can last up to a month if refrigerated or ten days if kept at room temperature. However, storing your eggs in the coolest part of the fridge is best, considering South Africa’s warm climate.
