Our History

Since 1963.

Nulaid has its roots in the emergence of the agri-business focussed, Bokomo in 1963.

The company invested in an animal feed mill, situated alongside it’s wheat mill in Malmesbury in the Swartland districts of the Cape, to commercialise the bran by-product. In 1982, the company expanded its agribusiness offering in the Western Cape by investing in poultry, specifically broiler and layer farming, and the provision of eggs for consumption into retail.

Bokomo had an appetite for expansion and ventured into Africa, Zambia with the acquisition of a breeder farm in 1996. The following year, 1997, Bokomo merged with Sasko, creating the dynamic Pioneer Foods Group. This enterprise became one of the dominant players in consumer food industry in South Africa, with wheat and maize milling, bakeries, confectionery, breakfast cereals, pasta, eggs, broilers, frozen foods, animal feeds, and packaging materials.

In 1999, Pioneer and Golden Lay teamed up to import Lohmann chickens. Pioneer later acquired Golden Lay and expanded further into Africa by acquiring a chicken breeding unit in Uganda in 2000.  The Pioneer Foods Group listed on the JSE on April 22, 2008.

In 2012, Pioneer Foods Agribusiness division, consisting of Nova Feeds, Nulaid, Tydstroom Business and Bellevue, split away from the Group and formed their own entity, Quantum Foods.

Today Quantum Foods, a listed entity, has grown into one of South Africa’s most successful agribusiness enterprises, with operations in Africa (Zambia, Uganda and Mozambique), together with a considerable operational footprint nationally in South Africa.
